watched korea vs. venezuela on saturday. there was a fan there that got on TV by holding up a sign, "bought tickets to the wrong game. go usa!" (they played on sunday). hahaha. wish we could've been so clever,  but it was good times all around. i've never been to a sporting event with fans as loud (and obnoxious) as the korean fans here. it was really rubbing me the wrong way... especially since venezuela didn't even really show up to the game, giving up 5 runs in the first inning, picking up 5 errors throughout the game, and scoring only 1 run? lame. still, it's definitely more fun going to a game where the fans actually care so much. i never really thought much about going to the olympics, world cup, or any country-aligned sports tournaments before this, but in the future, i think i'd definitely take advantage of any opportunities to do so.

what makes a job fulfilling?

theory proposed by malcolm gladwell in the book outliers as to what makes a job fulfilling:

1) autonomy

2) complexity

3) effort/reward relationship

not a bad theory, i think.

kogi

for all those out-of-staters who sent me articles about kogi...

stephen and i met up with andrew, the semi-new analyst, and his friends this saturday for the famed kogi tacos now being served at the alibi room. all in all, good, but not "wait-two-hours-in-line" good. definitely different from anything i've had before. something i'm glad i tried and would take friends from out of town to if they were real foodies, but nothing i would really crave. the press/public really do overhype everything - from violence in mexico to korean tacos.

had enough of AIG bonuses in the news?

i feel your pain, but take a break, then take a look at this. another angle on the ridiculousness of this financial mess. worth the read.

seen on the studio lot at 12:30pm...

... ron howard (should need no introduction, but wow is he really bald). presumably finishing up angels and demons shooting.

and

... harold ramis (tall skinny geeky guy from ghostbusters. he now looks not skinny at all, haha). ghostbusters 3 anyone?

darndest things happen in arizona

the good

the bad (note on this one: waggoner elementary is right next to kyrene middle school, where I spent 6-8th grades. i think it was in 8th grade when our cafeteria burned down because of a spark in the ceiling. not sure what you call that. small world? ironic? just plain coincidence or cursed? haha. who knows.)

the ugly

what is a fortune cookie anyway?

once in a while, stephen and i like to have dinner at little hong kong on sawtelle. it's not the most authentic, but it's a good value, meaning the food's not bad and the portions are ginormous (lasts me at least 3 meals). they also always have entertaining "fortune" cookies. case in point: dinner this friday. my cousin, john, who was visiting from boston, received this "fortune":

"if you think nobody cares if you are alive, try missing a couple of car payments."

at first, i thought, "how ridiculous! that's not a fortune.", but then i turned to the all-knowing wikipedia, and i quote:

"A "fortune" is a piece of paper with words of faux wisdom or a vague prophecy.

hm.. i guess the "fortune" john got could fall under "faux wisdom". so, my apologies to little hong kong for being so hard on your ridiculous little fortune cookies.

... also i feel like i may be over-using quotation marks in this post, haha.
